One often overlooked feature in Morningscore is the “Competitor Rank Comparison”.

This feature provides a great overview of the top keywords you or your competitors rank on.

The data it displays can help you in planning future optimization by showing you who is doing better than you (and who you can copy 😋). And it can show you unused opportunities that you can take advantage of when writing new content or making new landing pages.

1. Competitor Rank Comparison Setup
You can manipulate the data shown by using the keyword and competitor filters.

1.1 Choose the competitors
The Competitor Rank Comparison compares your keyword performance to that of your 2 other competitors.

Choose up to 2 competitors by clicking on “Choose competitors” and then checking the box next to the competitor/s of your choice in the drop down menu.

💡 Tip: If you would like to compare more than 2 competitors here is a workaround for you. Export the data by clicking on the “Export to CSV” button and choosing a file type in the drop down menu.

Then combine all the data from the downloaded files into one file.
To make it easier for yourself, we advise you choose only your tracked keywords when exporting data. In this way you will avoid missing data as the keywords will be the same for each new comparison.

1.2. Choose the keywords
By using filters you can control the keywords that are being displayed.

First, click on “Choose keywords” and select where the keywords are pulled from:

Checkmarking your own domain: The keywords displayed will be those your domain performs best for in the SERPS. The same keywords are shown when you click on your domain name in the Morningscore overview window. Click the blue “Apply” button after selection.

Checkmarking your competitor’s domain: The keywords displayed will be those competitor’s domain performs best for in the SERPS. The same keywords are shown when you click on your competitor’s domain name in the Morningscore overview window. Click the blue “Apply” button after selection.

Checkmarking tracked keywords: Display keywords you previously added to the Keyword Rank Tracker. Click the blue “Apply” button after selection.

1.3. Choose the number of keywords displayed
Morningscore will only display a certain number of the top performing keywords based on the criteria you have selected using the other two filters.
Choose how many keywords are displayed by clicking on the first filter and selecting between 10 and 50 top keywords.

1.4 Choose the time period
The data is affected by the period you set in the Morningscore tool. Open the calendar by clicking in the top right corner.

And choose the period you would like to see the data for.

2. How To Sort Your Data

You can manipulate the data shown by sorting data in the columns displayed.

2.1. Sort by Searches/mo
Click on “Searches/mo” will sort the keywords from those with the highest number of searches per month to those with the lowest number or vice versa.

2.2. Sort by Ranks
By clicking on any of the domains listed you can display your own or your competitor’s top ranking keywords and see how the other domains are performing in comparison.

2.3. Sort by Top rank
By clicking on the Top Rank column see where your competitors have an edge, so you know what to focus on in the future

3. Understanding And Using The Data

If we choose to see the rank comparison based on the top 50 keywords that our competitor (here Kota.co.uk) ranks for, we can see detailed data on mouseover.

Here we can see that Kota.co.uk ranks number 1 on the longtail keyword “web agency in london” with their frontpage as a landing page. The keyword’s monthly search volume is 480 and it has a potential traffic of 101 clicks monthly.

Respectively, our own website ranks number 11 on the same keyword, also with the frontpage as the landing page. We only get about 8 potential clicks.

We would like to increase that number of potential clicks, so we use the blue plus icon to add this keyword to our tracked keyword list. From now on, we can use this keyword in our future optimization and get a bigger piece of that traffic. 🍰🍰🍰
